Shoreworld: Matt O’Ree – Brotherhood

Matt O’Ree has had quite a successful ride so far. Going back to his 1998 album, 88 Miles, O’Ree has made substantial strides in his ongoing musical journey through rock and roll, blues and more. 88 Miles was so well received by national media that it secured him opening slots for such notables as Blue Oyster Cult, Blues Traveler, and Marshall Tucker Band.

But O’Ree was far from finished. His 2005 release, Shelf Life, saw him take at least four Asbury Music Awards for “Best Blues Band,” “Best Guitarist,” “Best Local Release,” and “Best Song of the …

Hailing from New York City’s musical underground, BOYTOY float somewhere between 1960s psychotic surf jams and early 1990s grunge rock. Glenn Van Dyke and Saara Untracht-Oakner founded the band in 2013 with two guitars, drums, and uber-infectious melodies. They set the tone and continue to craft catchy, fuzzy, rock nuggets that create dreamy summer vibes all year round and they have been packing rooms around New York City and L.A. on a regular basis.

BOYTOY just finished their first European as well as a Puerto Rican tour with their current lineup including Chase Noelle on drums (formerly of Thelma and …

Jan. 14 marks year four for Asbury Underground’s involvement with Light of Day. Pat Schiavino has been making great strides to help bring musical recognition to the City by the Sea. His cohabitation with Tony Pallagrosi and Light of Day has brought a fresh twist to a traditionally exclusive event held up on Ocean Avenue and beyond.

On the heels of the very successful Asbury Underground Art and Music Crawl, which brought some 10,000 attendees to the downtown district of Asbury Park this past October for a weekend of music, art and shopping, the Light of Day Foundation once again …

Deal Casino has graced these pages more than once in the recent past. The main reason they continue to stay in the publication is due to their continued excellence when it comes to composing great music in their own unique way.

Deal Casino is a four-piece rock band from Asbury Park, New Jersey, known for cerebral, infectious songs and electric live performances with elements of alt-rock, pop, and blues. All four members, Joe P., John Rodney, Jozii, and Chris Donofrio, have respectively earned their roles within the competitive and high-caliber music community of the Garden State. The Catholic Girls were born when schoolgirls Gail Petersen and Roxy Andersen put their guitars together to form the first all-female band from New Jersey that would be signed to a major label. With Doreen Holmes on drums, The Catholic Girls released an album on MCA both in the USA and Australia as well as a special Armed Forces Edition. They embarked on two national tours, received widespread commercial airplay and debuted on MTV to the music of their new wave anthem, “Boys Can Cry.”

Interesting fact: the band was scheduled to appear on Saturday Night Live but then were …

I have to say if there is one label in New Jersey that seems to be getting out there and making a difference, it’s Little Dickman. Little Dickman came upon the scene back in June of 2012, and they hit the ground running. Their bands and shows lit a fire under the music scene’s ass and they are now the cream of the crop, and so many great bands that have graced this page got their start and continued career with Little Dickman Records.

Having said that, Chris Yaniak, founder and head honcho for Little Dickman, has once again brought …

I’ve known Tommy Fuller for several years and have featured him here in Shoreworld in the past. Tommy Fuller and musical partner Jan Heywood are Spoondrift.

Jan Heywood got his musical start in the family, taking up piano before ditching that for guitar and eventually gravitating toward bluegrass, learning banjo and mandolin. One thing led to another as he joined a band and started shopping labels. He ended up recording at The Hit Factory and The Record Plant, striking up friendships with A&R honchos from Columbia Records who started using him on recordings of artists that they were thinking of …

The Susan Rumors was conceived in the back room at the Dragonfly Music & Coffee Cafe in Somerville, NJ by Joe Furnari, Mark Nuzzi and Bruce Tunkel.

Back in the 1980s, Bruce was a member of The Red House, and Mark and Joe were members of Soul Engines, both legendary bands. I was there and remembered playing with both artists during my time with In Between Dreams. This was during a very creative period for New Jersey original music, and the scene was churning out some interesting sounds. The two bands’ paths often crossed, and they played together on some …

The Gray Vines are a New Jersey-based duo who have been described as “embracing the strange” and are putting their post-modern spin on ’90s rock ‘n’ roll.

Jake Hoffman and Jill Deegan met in a Philly alleyway after attending the Post Pop Depression Tour. Deegan, desperate to escape a drink invite from an inebriated, glitter-covered fan, struck up a conversation with Hoffman. Hoffman, an accomplished toy inventor and Ghostbusters fanatic, and Deegan, a self-described game show junkie and college radio station manager, formed the duo shortly after.

Hoffman’s empathetic songwriting and aggressive guitar playing pairs well with Deegan’s melodic and …

Hesh has been around for many years. When it comes to original music in New Jersey, I can remember as far back as the early ’90s seeing him perform in bars with piano and voice to many approving fans. When you talk to him about his past, his simple answer pretty much tells the story of yet another New Jersey original that not only made an impression but did so as he moved around. I had recently asked him to explain his musical goals, and he had this to say:

“This album is some 20+ years in the making! I …

I first saw Kenny Dubman years ago on the circuit when he was with the Jersey hard rock band Prophet. And while I never knew him personally, his guitar playing was something we all knew well. Fast forward a few decades, and I was at Langosta to see my good friend Charlie Mills’ latest band, Rocket 88, and lo and behold Dubman was the guitar player in the group. The foursome blazed through a 45-minute set of some of the best rock and roll tunes while managing to demonstrate the years of honed talent on the little stage. As a …

This next Shoreworld act is part Nashville, part New Jersey. Co-founder Brother Love hooked up with my good friend Sarah Tomek and eventually married her. But before they were a couple, Brother Love and Sarah Tomek were hard at work making names for themselves on the scene and the national stage.

The main reason this band crosses my literary crosshairs is that Tomek is an Asbury Park girl who made her way into the national spotlight from the very stages we here in Monmouth still go to see cutting-edge music. Lighting up the drums for Maggie Rose, Tomek has played …

I’ve known of Bruce Tunkel for decades. The main reason I know him was for his role as the lead man for the Red Bank group The Red House. This New Jersey quartet was led by lead singer (talked about here) Bruce Tunkel (who also played guitar and piano, and served as primary lyricist). The Red House released their self-titled debut in 1990. Barely out of their teens at the time, the band were an apparent affinity for U2 on their collective sleeve.

They approach their subjects of spirituality and the human condition with an earnestness that, …

As the weather gets warmer in New Jersey, festivals start appearing in the Garden State. From music to art and film, festivals are the Jersey Shore mainstay once the snow goes away. And one of the fastest growing festivals is at the door now.

The 2017 Asbury Park Music & Film Festival (the third so far) begins on Thursday, April 20, and runs through Sunday, April 23. Combining movies and music, the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival looks to be the party of the springtime. Having said that, I wanted to mention some of the highlights and discuss details …

D.B. Calla hails from Toms River, NJ and is probably best known as a vocalist in the Toms River band EOS. She also served time in Blondsense and Ninth Infantry, two other Tri-State bands that have done quite well in the current decade. D.B. Calla has a sound reminiscent of the wall of sound made famous by Phil Spector in the 1960s and 1970s. Produced by the legendary Joe (Ciid) Birardi (Dirty Rats, EOS, River Monsters), D.B. Calla brings an old-school feel back to rock and roll along the lines of Martha and the Vandellas, early Blondie, Kim Carnes and …

Bobby Mahoney has always been a favorite of mine. His mixed use of modern rock and traditional sound has been a winner since day one. Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son is a hard rock/punk band from New Jersey, who utilizes killer guitar riffs, catchy choruses, and insightful lyrics in their energetic and explosive live show.

The group was formed in December 2010 under the name “Seventh Son” in East Brunswick, NJ by Mahoney, Jon Alba, and Drew Agey. Originally intended for a single show, the band quickly caught on locally and began to play the New Jersey rock circuit.…
