Shoreworld- Rick Barry: Two-Song Sampler Sneak Preview

I’ve known Rick Barry long before he became an Asbury Park mainstay. I can remember one of the first times I saw him live and immediately noticed his flair for songwriting and storytelling. As a real journeyman of honesty and emotion, Barry weaved tapestries of sadness and glory, happiness and darkened shades of melancholy all made up and dug deep within the character of this complicated writer. Rick Barry has a particular way of self-depreciation that is never warranted or deserved. If there was ever a writer that took things profoundly personal or listened to other opinions of his …

Lou Montesano is a name recognized from the early decade and his blockbuster band, Status Green. From the 2006 release of Status Green’s Greatest Hits Vol. 1, until their demise sometime in August of 2012, they ruled the roost. You’re talking about a band that could quickly put 800 people into the Stone Pony. But like all good things, they eventually ended. Personal reasons and industry fickleness were probably the reasons why, but in the end, I never found out what or why. Band members went their separate ways, but I always kept in touch with Montesano. Our …

So, this is an album Greg Wilkens started recording last January on Mechanic Street in Red Bank. On the first day, they began recording Tony Lewis — the producer, and owner of HI Voltage Music told Wilkens that he had just been notified that the property the studio was on was being leveled to build a big apartment building in its place. This news left several local businesses in need of a place to go. So, Wilkens and crew worked with a bit of a fire under their asses and ended up with five songs before the doors had …

Legendary Misfits Guitarist, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein: “Doyle II – As We Die”

Lodi’s original son, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, got his start back in 1980 with the original Misfits. Known for his trademark makeup, hairstyle, and raucous guitar playing, Doyle wasn’t always as he appears today and began his journey starting out as a roadie. Glenn Danzig and Doyle’s brother Jerry Only taught him how to play guitar and put him into the lineup. Doyle just happened to be the band’s third guitarist and came on the heels of Bobby Steele.

After the breakup of the Misfits in late 1983, Doyle went on to play with Kryst – The Conqueror …

Joe Birardi has been plugging away for several years now in different Ocean County bands, and I’ve mentioned him in this column more than once. His latest live and studio band is River Monsters, and they have a new six-song EP out and show at the Stone Pony on Feb. 24 with special guests NJ Rockhouse, Plug Fiction, David E. Ulrich and night closer, Pathway. The new EP is the latest results of singer/songwriter Joe “Ciid” Birardi and his compatriots. The band was named by Stone Pony promoter, Kyle Brendle, around two years ago, and it’s been that ever …

I’ve discussed The Cynz here in the past. Their release of Superfan on Bongo Boy Records in 2015 was a big hit here at The Aquarian. The Cynz is a full-throttle rock band formed around the songwriting talents of poet Cyndi Dawson (vocals) and Henry Seiz (guitar, vocals). The band has been described as “the closest thing to CBGB’s as you will ever get.” Their songs are hard-rocking tales of heartbreak, survival, determination, redemption, and sometimes unbridles joy at a breakneck speed.

The Cynz have been rocking the NJ/NYC area and abroad for over seven years now; …

I’ve known Karen Mansfield for many years. Karen got her real start in a band called The Bleeding Knees. Mostly tongue-in-cheek shock-rock from girls looking to startle boys, The Bleeding Knees were a local punk outfit that sang outrageous songs about the beautiful act of sexual gratification. From the hilarious description of appendages to stories of oral and acrobatic antics, no stone was left unturned in their quest to get the dance floor packed with amorous boys and girls.

Many years later, we played in a band called The Summer Nationals back in the mid-1990s. A group that …

Shoreworld – Anjelia Pelay: “Heart of Gold”

As an actress onstage and on television, Toms River, NJ-born performer Anjelia Pelay has stolen the heart of wrestler Randy Orton, charmed Gene Simmons, and channeled both Britney Spears and the Beatles with equal aplomb. But for Anjelia (anj-uh-LEE-uh!), all that acting was just a warm-up for her real passion which is music.

Like a real performer at heart, she brings an exciting, theatrical flair to the often-staid world of singer-songwriter fare. Pelay’s soulful, hook-laden contemporary country-pop has won industry kudos from the likes of producer Rodney Jerkins and former Styx bassist/vocalist Glen Burtnik, with whom she regularly …

The Asbury Park Music and Film Festival has been going on for a mere few years now, but music in Asbury dates back to the heady days of 1904 and our own Arthur Pryor, the music industries very first “Rock Star.” From those early days through the ‘60s and ‘70s times where clubs ruled the coast Asbury Park was a fabled destination for musical exploration and discovery. Even today, amongst the big money condos and priceless real estate dealings that have abandoned many of the people who kept the town going in its lean years, Asbury Park is enjoying …

Sometimes the name of a record sums up the whole of a band’s recent past. Losing members or having to replace people for a myriad of reasons can produce inspirational music and aspirations instead of sending one deep into a chasm of despair — and that seems to be the case for Long Branch’s own Bruce Ferguson. I’ve known Bruce longer than most of you have been alive. Mixing, drinking and collaborating as far back as the mid-1980s, Bruce Ferguson has always been a mainstay on the music scene, both in my time and continuing into the present.

I first spoke with TechFest’s lead man, Bill Bourke, several years ago when the festival was in its infancy. Since that time, he has grown the festival — including many new acts — with seasoned and learning experiences and situations to match. Having known Bill since he was old enough first to tune guitars in his father Dennis Bourke’s studio back in the mid-1990s, I knew that his passion for music and teaching would result in magical results, and his dreams are finally becoming realities.

The 2018 TechFest 8 lineup is looking great! They have got some cool …

Bebe Buell – Baring It All: Greetings from Nashbury Park

Most of what the mainstream media discusses about Bebe Buell is sensationalist and shallow. They discuss her notoriety for dating famous rock stars and being Liv Tyler’s mother, but most conventional publications skip the deep history of Buell’s musical career unless they are reminded.

Bebe Buell has been writing and performing since she was old enough to walk. As for her recording career, Buell first started back in 1981 and Rick Derringer produced her four-song EP — that also featured members of The Cars. Now that’s a debut! Bands such as the B-Sides and The Gargoyles were Buell’s musical vehicles …

Eryn has developed a reputation as one of the premier up and coming voices on the scene today. Initially, from Maryland and now living in New Jersey, Eryn’s style is heavily influenced by the musical traditions of the south. Her respect for the traditions of jazz, blues and country — fused with her modern pop style and brought together by Eryn’s incredible vocal ability — has been said to give even the most hardened critic chills.

She has performed at venues such as the Mayo Performing Arts Center, The NJ State Theater, Newton Theater, the legendary Stone Pony, …

I first explored the musical world of Foxanne back in 2015, when they released their first musical project under the careful guidance of Chelsea Gohd. Well, she’s back again with another fascinating look into the world of compositional excellence with a brand-new EP titled, Halfling. The record has been released by Brooklyn-based GoodEye Records. This reasonably new indie label is intent on releasing music of all genres that present engaging, challenging and enriching narratives with high-quality visual companions to match.

Halfling features six brand new songs from the mind of Gohd. And while she has enlisted help …

Frankenstein 3000 formed in 1998, released nine studio records and have been on over 20 compilation records. They have toured with The New York Dolls, Earl Slick, The Dictators, Monster Magnet, Urge Overkill, Robin Zander and many more. They have served as David Johansen’s backup band as well as many other Rock Luminaries. They were honored at the 11th Annual Asbury Music Awards as Top Rock Band.

The Blunt Truth is their first vinyl release — it’s an album in every sense of the word. They’re incredibly proud of every second of this recording. It’s a classic, not …

Ropetree hails from the infamous Toms River sector of Ocean County. The band is no stranger to the scene and has played all over the country. Their original biography sums the group up as, “Four Army ants plotting a way to take down a Praying Mantis. You can only Duct tape the anger and frustration of life for so long. When the Volcano erupts, you get Ropetree. The band is selling cotton-candy poison, collecting addicts and killing the non-believers with unexpected purity. Nothing has been given to these guys.   Atlantic City has long been hailed one of the premier entertainment meccas of the east. While focused mainly on gambling, many other musical, stage and entertainment events have been performed at the original city by the sea.

While known for its casinos, beaches, and boardwalk, Atlantic City has also scored big when it comes to entertainment options that swerve from the norm. From the very first days that Jonathan Pitney discovered money to be made at the shore with health and fitness ideas to the rise of …
