The Heart of Saturday Night

Master Song-Stylist Pat Guadagno brings the head-scratching, mind-bending, brilliance of Tom Waits to the Algonquin stage, with the blood and whiskey-stained music of one of the most deviant and provocative artists of our time.

The Oscar-nominated, Grammy award-winning, self-proclaimed “Role model for the marginalized and misunderstood,” Tom Waits recorded 27 groundbreaking albums during a career that spans five decades.

Follow the misadventures of Cigar Chewin’ Charlie, Jimmy the Harp and The Pock Mark Kid through theatrical tales of bungled romance, late-night diners and early morning cold fronts, delivered with passion and reverence …

Just Beneath the Surface is a collection of 11 songs, and it is the first solo acoustic album that Doug has ever released. Up until now, Doug has been known exclusively for his guitar-playing prowess. This album shows us a different side of Doug Mikula, as it reveals his vocal and lyrical style. These songs are personal, raw and real.

Doug Mikula is a force to be reckoned with in the New Jersey music community. His virtuosic guitar style utilizes a unique blend of musical elements that transcends genre. He has performed with bands like Woodfish, Domino Effect, …

Record label, Asbury Wax Cylinder Recordings, recently announced the launch of Carl Chesna & Co.’s first full-length album, entitled Prayer to the Black Madonna — a retrospective record that is part alterna-folk, part Americana, and ultimately all rock ‘n’ roll. Reminiscent of John Mellencamp, The Pretenders, REM, and Tom Petty, the band and album capture a contemporary sound influenced by the Asbury Park lifestyle and music scene.

“Carl Chesna goes deep in a world where everything is 15 seconds,” said Jon Leidersdorff — owner of Lakehouse Music and founder of Asbury Park Music Foundation. “I was incredibly impressed …

Hailing from Long Island, N.Y., Davey Jones created Lost Boy? as a bedroom, 4-track experimental pop recording project. Jones is an exciting character born in Plainview, N.Y. He grew up in Suffolk County, Long Island and has been a New Yorker for over 33 years.  His illustrations and collages surge with the early 1920s-1950s animation nostalgia. Combining illustration and digital technique, visuals are influenced by imagination, animation, pop art, comics, street art, Walt Disney, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, R. + Aline-Kominsky Crumb, Ernie Bushmiller, Daniel Johnston, and his contemporaries. Jones has created artwork for bands, record labels, venues, and …

Rachael Zamstein – A Local Girl Comes Back To Her Hometown

I can remember seeing Rachel Zamstein along with local luminaries such as Rick Barry and Val Emmich several years ago across town. It seemed that just as Zamstein was making her mark in the city, she was suddenly gone. It’s been over 12 years since she’s been on the scene and I’m genuinely interested in what she’s been up to. Her new band is top notch, and her manager told me she has new music to perform and soon to release on Notpop Records for this summer season.

Vextion makes their return to the scene with their much-anticipated sophomore release, Vindictive. The five-track EP encapsulates the power trio’s live performance while covering an amalgamation of topics concerning self-worth, love, and vengeance.  The band hasn’t changed members, which is a refreshing thing in an industry of incestuous group hopping that I witness on a weekly basis. I see one guy in another band I’m reviewing when I just mentioned him the week before and it gets ridiculous, so heads up to Vextion for sticking together and continuing to make great music.

Vextion consists of Kate Ortiz, vocals …

King Nectar is a high octane, fun-loving, original rock group based in Hoboken, N.J. The members tell me that they met at an Alien Abduction Support Group (AASG) in 2013. Their bio lovingly states that, “After sharing their frightening, yet exhilarating, stories with the group, they realized their experiences were eerily similar. Each had been abducted by the same ship, captained by a charming and experimental alien leader known as “‘King Nectar’.”

For nearly a year, King Nectar routinely grabbed these rockers before completing his mission objective; to inject the right amount of “nectar” into each musician so …

Telegraph Hill Records – Compilation and Live Shows

I’ve tried to cover just about everything that goes on in our shore area, and that includes record labels that concentrate on promoting local acts and performers that have been making their mark in the area and beyond. Names that I’ve covered here include MOTO Records, Little Dickman Records, Good Eye Records, Sniffling Indie Kids, The Bouncing Souls Pete Steinkoph’s Chunksaah Records, and the fine folks over at Lakehouse Music and their bevy of services. There are also a couple I’ve yet to mention such as Capacitator Records and today’s subject Telegraph …

Doug Zambon and the boys from The Vansaders have been tearing up the scene and generating much interest with their repertoire of punk-tinged music for a while now. And if 2018 was a wild year of music and activity, welcome to 2019 and the brand-new release of new Vansaders music. Standstill is their fifth studio effort and the latest since releasing Stuck In New York City back in 2014. This is also their first, full-fledged acoustic-based record.

When it comes to describing their sound and style, the band says it best with their short bio: “The Vansaders seem …

Several bands in the world just happen to land on the same name choice. It happens. Blank Pages is one of those bands. With Blank Pages bands in Germany, as well as a Christian band in Indiana and another rock band in Delaware, it’s just a situation that can’t be stopped. The main thing that separates this band from those other versions is the New Jersey Blank Pages’ style and originality when it comes to writing, playing and performing their particular brand of pop rock music. The band has enjoyed a superlative amount of stage time, and after breaking …

Shoreworld – Little Big Toe: “Champagne and Coffee Stains”

I covered Little Big Toe’s 2017 release Is This What You Hear in your Head and was duly impressed. James Cutrera combines a soulful and emotional composition style with the panache and intelligence of a writer looking to draw more people into his world than not. He continues that trend with his latest release, and I’m happy to see some of the names (see below) that helped get this project into the spotlight.

Little Big Toe recently released its fourth recorded installment entitled Champagne and Coffee Stains. In typical DIY fashion, this album was almost entirely recorded in …

The record also features 12 songs ranging from down and dirty blues to old-school rock ‘n’ roll goodness. He continues to ride high on that record and play shows all over the area in …

The Strand Theater in Lakewood has been churning out quality shows and events for several years now. I’ve seen many up-and-coming artists as well as bonafide stars there and have never had a bad time. From the theater’s construction—which gives every seat a perfect view—to the bar and diverse crowd it attracts, I can safely say that the Strand is one of New Jersey’s most beautiful venues for live music. In 1922, during Lakewood’s heyday as a resort, world-renowned theater architect Thomas W. Lamb designed and supervised construction of the Strand Theater. The Strand was built to exacting standards of …

Hailing from the Bayshore area of New Jersey, this four-piece unit has been entertaining and moving audiences for over 20 years but still sounds as fresh as it did on day one! With four alternating lead vocalists, catchy melodies, and sophisticated harmonies, they will take you on a journey of pop-rock delight! I especially love the Star Trek: The Next Generation castmate take on the band. “If the Beatles and the Cowsills got it on backstage at Ed Sullivan, The Wag would totally be their love …

I’ve known Jason Spiewak for many years. At one time he was working for TVT Records and then over at Rock Ridge Music as its president. He is also head of Noble Steed music (and JLS Management), which has produced and managed artists such as Gene Harding, Brian Dunn, Sariah, Mele Kalikimaka, Constantine Maroulis, and others. The one thing about Jason that I always know is that whatever he puts his mind to gets put into the visual field of number one, and he continues that with Golden Dimes, a band that he now actually plays in.
